There are many established public footpaths to enjoy which lead directly through Carlton-in-Coverdale and carry on through many local villages including West Scrafton, Horseshoe and Gammersgill to name only a few. The village Pub, ‘The Forester’s Arms’, has an excellent reputation, and there are also numerous pubs that provide a handy stop off during a day’s walk. A little further afield, but still only four miles away, guests will be able to visit the historic village of Middleham. Once the home of Richard III, Middleham is steeped in history and has some great attractions to visit. Nestled between two rivers, the magnificent castle of Middleham has the largest castle keep in the north of England and a Royal heritage that once earned it the title of the Windsor of the North. Horse racing fans really must take a trip too as the village is famous for its rich horse racing history and is home to many of the top stables in the country. The market town of Leyburn is also just five miles away and offers guests the chance to browse around the weekly farmers market offering local produce and arts and crafts. There are plenty also plenty of tea shops, restaurants and cafes, so make sure you plan a whole day in Leyburn. Perfect for families of all ages guests will surely want to visit the Chocolate Museum in Leyburn and also the fun attraction of The Forbidden Corner which is only a short drive away. A little further afield, but still within an easy hours drive, guests will be able to take a day trip to York, Ripon, Harrogate, Richmond or the cathedral city of Durham.

A further 10-minute walk takes you to the Yorkshire Dales Brewery which has a shop and, in the summer, a beer garden at weekends.
    The Yorkshire Dales offer spectacular scenery and an abundance of walks of all ability levels to explore. From the house itself there are beautiful walks along the banks of the nearby River Ure and the Askrigg Waterfalls Walk, which takes in both Whitfield Force and Mill Gill Force. For the more adventurous, longer walks and climbs in Wensleydale and Swaledale are within easy reach. The Yorkshire Three Peaks can be accessed from Horton-in-Ribblesdale, 40-minute drive away. For more restful days, there is so much to see and do within an easy distance. Picturesque Aysgarth Falls and Castle Bolton are nearby, and the market towns of Leyburn and Hawes are a short drive away. A stream behind the house runs down to the River Swale, about 200 yards away, giving opportunities for riverside walks along part of the Coast to Coast path. Within easy walking distance is Reeth, which is set around a village green surrounded by cafés, pubs, restaurants, craft and gift shops.

    Swaledale is a popular destination for cyclists, following from the Tour de France Grand Depart and the annual Tour de Yorkshire. 2019 sees the cyclists taking part in the World Championships passing through Grinton, the route taking them past Corner House. A short walk along the road takes you to the Dales Bike Centre offering cycle hire, and a must stop is the on-site coffee shop serving excellent cakes and hot drinks.

    For food and drink you will be spoilt for choice. The village pub is a 15th-century former coaching house, which overlooks the River Swale and is a popular stopping off point for walkers and cyclists. It is a 50 yards stroll from the cottage and serves good food and local ales. The village of Reeth is a short distance either by foot or car, and has a variety of pubs also serving good food.

    The charming town of Richmond with its Norman castle, cobbled market place and Georgian Theatre is within easy reach, as are Easby Abbey, Aysgarth Falls, Bowes Museum, Semerwater and Hardraw Force. Each year the beautiful Yorkshire Dales form the backdrop for a fantastic range of festivals, galas, agricultural shows and large scale events. Whether it’s music, arts, books, walking or even scarecrows, there will be a festival for you. A fish & chip van comes on a Wednesday at 7.30pm - if you like fish & chips these are a must!
    Nearby are the market towns of Hawes and Leyburn with their many shops, pubs, restaurants and craft workshops, where craftsmen display their skills and sell handmade products. For groceries, Leyburn is 4 miles away and has convenience stores as well as an award-winning delicatessen and winery. Fresh eggs are available in the village and newspapers can be provided at the nearby farm. All the big supermarkets regularly deliver to the village.
    Historical castles and ruins are numerous with Bolton Castle almost on the doorstep, and Middleham Castle a few miles away. From Middleham square you can sit and watch the impressive sight as the race horses pass through on their way to the gallops. The Forbidden Corner is just down the road with its labyrinth of tunnels and underground caves to explore. With so much to do and see, you will certainly want to return.
